Elly Cho - The Largest Painting Flying Across the Sky

Maybe Elly Cho has created the biggest painting among Korean artists. The big picture does not reside in a regular exhibition space or on the wall. Nor does it stay mounted, nor does it exist physically in front of viewers. The painting by her is floating up in the air for anyone to see from anywhere on the ground, even from a far distant place. 

Cho is an artist who returned home recently after studying in England for a long time. Moving from one genre to another, she has produced works in all genres, including painting, drawing, photography, installation and performance, that materialize or visualize her feelings and thoughts derived from her life. To the artist, mediums are synonymous with language or tools. The artist chooses and uses the medium or material she feels is the right one to express what she intends to say. To her, if art is about revealing things, raw materials are something that can be revealed. Indeed, raw materials are like a cluster of elementary particles in that they are both charged and neutral. They can be shaped into thoughts, emotions or messages only by the hands of the artist. 

In this sense, Elly Cho is really free from the rigid conventional criteria and divisions between genres or mediums in the Korean artistic community. Never confined to any one particular genre or specific raw materials, the artist regards fine art and its mediums as a vessel to be filled with free-wheeling ideas and imaginations, honest thoughts and feelings, and above all dreams. The artist wants to bring dreams to viewers, which means making the viewers' imagination and feelings expand and triggering their thoughts. Indeed, all arts have a permanent tradition of proclaiming themselves as a messenger of spiritual infection and feelings. "It is my desire to create paintings on the theme of hope. I want to produce works of art that move the audience to sympathize with my feelings and communicate with me through my works of art."  (The Artist's Note) For this artist, the desire to create works of art is fundamental; the desire to create art that is beautiful, meaningful and touching became a part of herself. Once entangled, life and art are difficult to disentangle. 

Elly Cho's creative process seems faithful to the perspective that sees art as 'creative self-expression', which means creating personal artworks that reveal the artist's own personal vision of the universe. However, the concept of art as self-expression is a pretty new idea born and established only after the modern era. The perception that art equals the artist's inner self may seem valid at first sight. But it leads to a simplistic identification or an utterly naive equation of artists with their works, letting the basic characteristics of art forms pass unnoticed. Thus, such perception may give rise to some serious or fatal misunderstanding. The work of art cannot be separated from the artist, but is not necessarily identical to the artist. The mind and spirit of the artist alone do not make art. What the artists do is, before anything else, to learn the creative process and create their own artworks. It takes both work and practice, and the creative process involves a lot of manual work. Therefore, the best artists can do is to create artworks that really pique their interest. 

On November 22, 2005, Cho unfurled a colorful painting of 20 by 60 meters in size, hanging from a hot-air balloon in the sky above Olympic Park in Songpa-gu, Seoul. The painting, which was entitled "The Soaring of Cheonggyecheon," was perhaps the largest of its kind so far in Korea. The hot-air balloon flew around over the city for about an hour, allowing everyone on the ground to see the painting. This exhibition was a form of performance, installation and at the same time a painting. It was a typical painting except that she raised it high in the sky for all to see, rather than putting it up on the wall or hanging it in a specific spot. Viewers would tilt their heads back to look up at the sky and appreciate the giant painting floating around up there, which is readily visible from far and wide. Besides, the painting would be constantly fluttering and tossing and turning in the wind. 

"I thought the Cheonggyecheon restoration project was a landmark accomplishment to make Seoul a beautiful place to live in, so I wanted to create a meaningful artwork befitting the greatness of the project. That was why I thought I would display the abstract presentation of Cheonggyecheon, the long stream stretching about 11 kilometers from the Cheonggye Square to Han River, in the sky so that Seoul citizens can see it from their windows. I decided to use a hot-air balloon as a means to make my plan happen... I  painted buildings on the upper part of the painting to symbolize the dazzling and bustling civilized world of the Cheonggyecheon area before restoration, and I painted fish, trees and so on on the lower part to symbolize the new look of Cheonggyecheon as an urban stream with natural beauty. In addition, I included in the painting a park symbolizing Seoul Forest as well as Supyo Bridge, Saebyokdari, Narae Bridge and Dumuldari, placing significantly the enchanting historic bridges over the stream." This huge banner painting is hanging high with the vast expanse of the sky as the wall. Indeed, the sky may have been the first canvas for our creativity, presenting a diversity of ever-changing images.  It harbors different colors and also a wide array of shapes, as could be seen by the ever-changing shapes of clouds and the whole spectrum of colors from dawn to dusk.  The sky is a huge canvas for those given to fantasy and imagination. 

Elly Cho went up to the sky with the painting. Very often we see airships adorned with product logos or images or advertising balloons bearing banners put up high in the sky. They are giant airborne billboards, images and at the same time paintings. The artist took a ride on a hot-air balloon with a banner painting hanging below. She wanted that, as the banner painting went up high into the sky, it would be seen and appeal to viewers anywhere on the ground. Calling for an active viewing and appreciation of art, this exhibition encourages a new exhibition culture that is on a different level than the existing exhibition culture in the narrow sense. Moreover, the artist broke away from the institution of exhibition by extending the display of images beyond an enclosed exhibition space into the space of our daily lives. The painting mounted in the sky reminds viewers that they still retain intact the same eyes of the days when they gazed up at the moon, the stars and clouds. While watching the painting that is hanging down long and flowing in the wind and drifting slowly in the sky like a kite, the viewers recall their fond childhood memories packed with nostalgia and romanticism and at the same time take an interesting glimpse into the emerging sign of a new form of public art.

조애리-하늘을 나는 가장 큰 그림

그림은 벽이란 공간을 지지대로 삼아 시각적 현존성을 강하게 드러낸다. 회화란 ‘일정한 평면에 환영을 주는 장치’라고 정의할 수 있다. 직립한 인간의 시선에 조응하는 벽에 걸린 그림은 하나의 장면을 선사해왔다. 그것은 인간의 눈에 호소하고 한 눈에 걸려들며 망막을 과녁 삼아 다가온다. 우리의 눈과 가슴이 이미지의 덫에 걸려들기를 기다리는 함정 같은 것 이 벽에 걸린 그림이다. 그것은 일종의 구멍이기도 하다. 벽화로부터 출발해 특정 건축 공 간에 종속된 벽/벽 그림에서 자유로워진 나무패널, 캔버스, 사진과 영화 역시 편평한 평면공 간을 유지해오면서 늘 그 벽을 후경에 두었다. 벽이 없다는 것은 이미지가 자신의 존재를 드리울 장소를 박탈당하는 것이다. 따라서 이미지의 서식장소로서의 벽과 평면 공간은 그림 과 불가분의 관계를 맺고 있다. 땅바닥에 드리워진 그림자의 윤곽을 둘러친 선들이 일어나 벽으로 옮겨가고 이후 패널과 캔버스, 인화지와 모니터 등의 평면공간으로 이동한 역사가 미술/화면의 역사이기도 하다. 물론 이미지가 반드시 그러한 공간 속에서만 자기 생을 유지 한 것은 아니다. 그렇지만 결국 현실적이고 물리적인 공간 속에서 인간의 육체에 조응하는 공간과 시선이 확보되는 거리 속에서 보여 지고 논의되어왔다.

집단적인 공공의 장소에서 이미지가 주로 놓여지던 시절에 그림들은 한결같이 크고 웅장하 고 거대했다. 그것은 수많은 사람들의 눈과 가슴에 직접적으로 호소하고 특정 공간을 제의 적이고 신성한 분위기로 연출할 필요에 의해서 더욱 고조되었다. 성당과 사찰, 특정한 종교 적 공간 그리고 왕궁이나 성과 같은 장소에서 이미지는 그렇게 놓여지고 보여 졌다. 혹은 공공의 장소인 광장이나 거리에 세워진 동상과 다양한 기념물 역시 다수의 대중들이 비교적 먼 거리에서도 볼 수 있도록 배려한 장치에서 나왔다. 특정한 이데올로기와 권위, 명령과 복종을 암시하는 그 상징물들은 크기와 덩어리에서 보는 이를 우선 압도해야 했다. 물리적 실존이 권력과 지배가 주는 공포와 비례했던 것이다.

근대에 들어서 미술관의 등장은 별도의 독립되고 전문적인 관리와 체계에 의해 조율되는 ‘뮤지엄 시스템’ 아래 전시 공간에 맞는, 들어올 수 있는 작품들의 제작을 가능케 했다. 아 울러 미술시장의 형성 속에 미술작품들은 실내 공간 내지 주거공간에 적절한 크기로 수용되 어야 했다. 이렇듯 작품의 크기란 무엇인가라는 문제는 의외로 미술사적, 문화적, 경제적 측 면과 상당히 복합적으로 맞물려있다.

조애리는 아마도 한국작가 중에서 가장 커다란 그림을 선보인 작가일 것이다. 그 큰 그림 은 일반적인 전시공간이나 특정한 벽을 갖지 않는다. 아울러 고정되어 있거나 인간의 물리 적인 신체 앞에 현존하지도 않는다. 그녀가 그리고 만든 그림은 공중에 부양되어 있다. 지 상에 있는 자들이 고개를 들어 바라보는 그림, 아주 먼 곳에서도 볼 수 있는 그런 그림이 다.

그녀는 영국에서 오랜 유학생활을 마치고 귀국한 작가로서 페인팅, 드로잉, 사진, 설치와 퍼포먼스 등 모든 장르를 넘나들면서 자신의 삶에서 파생한 생각과 감정을 물질화하거나 시각 화하는 작업을 선보이고 있다. 이 작가에게 있어 매체란 언어이자 도구에 해당한다. 자신이 하고자 하는 말을 정확히 담아내거나 효과적이라고 여기는 것(재료, 매체)들을 선택하고 이 를 연출하고 있는 것이다. 예술이 사물을 드러내는 것이라면 재료는 바로 그 드러내어 질 수 있는 그것이다. 사실 재료들은 일종의 소립자와 같다. 충전되어 있으면서도 중성을 띠고 있기에 그렇다. 작가의 손에 의해 비로소 그 재료는 생각이 되고 감정이 되고 메시지가 된 다.

그런 면에서 조애리는 한국 화단의 관습화 된 장르나 매체의 엄격한 기준과 분리에서 무척 자유로운 작가다. 특정 장르나 한정된 재료에 국한되어 있지 않고 자유로운 발상과 상상력, 자신의 생각과 감정을 솔직하게 담는 그릇으로 미술과 매체를 여긴다. 그리고 그 안에 무엇 보다도 꿈을 담고자 한다. 보는 이들에게는 그 꿈을 전달하고자 한다. 꿈을 전달한다는 것 은 다른 이의 상상력과 감정을 팽창시키고 사고를 촉발시키는 것에 다름 아니다. 모든 예술 은 사실 정신적인 전염과 감정의 메신저를 자처해 온 역사를 항구적으로 지니고 있다. “희망을 주제로 한 그림을 그리고 싶고 사람들이 나와 공감할 수 있는 그리고 내 작품을 통 해서 나와 대화를 나눌 수 있는 작품들을 만들고 싶습니다.”(작가노트)

이 작가에게 있어 예술창작욕구는 근원적이다. 아름답거나 의미 있고 감동적인 예술을 창조 하려는 욕망은 이미 그 자신의 일부가 되었다. 그러니까 ‘인생과 예술은 일단 뒤엉키면 쉽 게 떼어내기 힘든 것이 되고 만다.’

조애리의 작업은 예술창조를 ‘자기표현’으로 보는 관점에 충실해 보인다. 개인적인 우주관 을 드러내는 개인만의 작품이란 것이다. 그러나 이런 관점은 근대 이후에 태동된 개념이고 제도이기도 하다. 예술이 그 자아와 동등한 것이라는 인식은 일견 타당해보이지만 한편으로 는 예술가란 존재와 작품 그 자체를 단순하게 일치시켜버리거나 너무 순진한 동등관계로 파 악해하게 한다. 그리고 이는 예술형식의 기본적인 특성을 간과시킨다. 예술행위를 개인 존 재와 일치시키거나 동등하게 이해한다는 것은 다소 심각하고 치명적인 오해를 야기할 수 있 다. 그림은 작가와 분리될 수 없지만 반드시 일치한다고도 할 수 없다. 작가의 마음과 정신 이 곧바로 미술이 되지는 않는다. 무엇보다도 예술가의 일은 작업하는 법을 배워 예술작품 을 창조하는 것이다. 일과 실천이 우선되는 것이고 몸이 행하는 것이 바로 작업이다. 따라 서 예술가가 할 수 있는 최선은 자신이 관심을 갖고 있는 작품을 만드는 것뿐이다.

2005년 11월 22일 서울 송파구 올림픽 공원에서 열기구에 실려 하늘로 올라가 펼쳐 보인 그녀의 그림은 화려한 색상으로 물든 가로 20m, 세로 60m의 크기였다. 제목은 ‘청계천의 웅비’다. 아마도 그림으로서는 가장 커다란 크기를 지니고 있어 보인다. 서울 하늘을 약 한 시간 동안 선회하면서 열기구에 매단 그림을 자상에 있는 사람들이 보도록 한 것이다. 이 전시는 일종의 퍼포먼스이자 설치이고 그런가하면 전형적인 회화이기도 하다. 다만 그녀는 그림을 벽에 걸거나 특정한 장소에 걸어두기 보다는 하늘로 끌어올렸다. 사람들은 고개를 뒤로 젖히고 하늘을 보고 그 하늘을 유유히 날고 있는 매우 커다란 그림을 바라보게 된다. 꽤나 먼 거리에 있는 사람들로 그림감상이 가능할 것이다. 그런가하면 그림은 시간에 따라 끝없이 이동한다. 바람에 의해 그림은 수시로 출렁거리고 뒤척인다.

“청계천 복원 사업은 서울을 아름다운 환경으로 만들기 위한 획기적인 사업이라고 생각했고 따라서 거기에 맞는 뜻 깊은 작품을 만들고 싶었다. 그래서 청계광장에서 한강에 이르기까

지 약 11킬로미터의 긴 청계천의 모습을 상징적으로 그리고 그것을 시민들이 창문만 열면 볼 수 있게 하늘에 전시했으면 하는 생각을 하게 되었다. 그것을 실천하기 위한 방법으로 열기구를 이용한 전시를 기획하게 되었다...작품 상단에 그려진 빌딩들을 통하여 복구 전 청 개천의 현란하고 복잡했던 문명세계를 상징하였고 하단에는 물고기와 나무 등을 그려 넣어 자연과 도심이 공존하는 청계천의 새로운 모습을 나나냈다. 서울 시민의 숲을 상징하는 공 원, 수표교, 새벽다리, 나래교, 두물다리 등을 작품에 포함하여 청계천의 매력적인 교각들을 의미 있게 배치하였다.”(작가노트)

일종의 이 거대한 현수막 그림, 걸개그림은 광활한 하늘을 벽 삼아 걸려있다.
사실 하늘이야말로 최초의 화면이었을 것이다. 하늘은 시시각각 다양한 이미지를 보여준다. 그것은 색을 머금고 있고 다채로운 형상을 또한 품고 있다. 천변만화하는 구름이 그렇고 아 침과 저녁 사이 각종 색채의 스펙트럼을 보여주는 모습이 그러하다. 이미 하늘은 몽상과 상 상에 사로잡힌 이들에게는 커다란 화폭에 다름 아니다. 구름이 짓는 여러 형상을 통해 사물 들을 추출하고 이름을 지어준다. 새털 같고 토끼 같고 사람 같은 구름이 지나간다. 솜사탕 같은가 하면 카프치노의 거품 같기도 하다. 맑고 화창한가 하면 흐리고 비가 오기도 하고 서리와 눈, 우박이 내린다. 온통 물에 적셔지기도 하고 하얀 눈에 파묻히기도 하다. 천둥과 번개가 내려치기도 한다. 하늘은 이미 그 자체로 변화무쌍한 이미지이다. 아마도 하늘을 처 음 바라본 사람들로부터 시작해 지금까지 하늘은 인간에게 이곳이 아닌 다른 곳, 현실적 삶 의 공간이 아닌 또 다른 곳에 대한 환영을 바다와 함께 피워주었을 것이다. 밤의 하늘은 그 런 상상력을 더욱 고조시켰다. 촘촘히 떠있는 별과 달은 모든 인간의 신화와 전설의 보고이 다. 그런가하면 별들을 연결해 사자자리, 궁수자리, 전갈자리 등의 이름을 지어주면서 닮은 꼴을 찾는가하면 은하수와 쪽배, 견우직녀의 이야기들이 이미지와 함께 수놓아져있다.
이미 하늘은 오래 전부터 화면이었다. 그 하늘에 이미지를 직접 시술하거나 펼쳐 보인 경우 가 없지는 않았을 것이다. 이른바 에어쇼를 보면 날렵한 비행기들이 공중에서 상승과 낙하 를 반복한다. 하얀 연기가 뭉실 거리면서 피어나는데 그 연기가 도넛의 모양 등을 만들어 보인다. 혹은 저 먼 하늘을 천천히 날아가는 비행기는 마치 물고기의 부드럽고 적막한 유영 을 연상시킨다. 아울러 그 비행기의 꼬리에서 남겨진 연기가 꽤나 오랫동안 사라지지 않고 살아남아 길고 뚜렷한 길의 자취를 남기는 경우도 본다. 비행기의 드로잉이라고 할까? 사람들은 담배를 피우면서 담배연기를 혀끝으로 말아 다시 내뿜으면서 굴뚝의 연기나 도넛 의 둥근 고리를 만들어 보인다.

조애리는 그 하늘에 그림을 들고 올라갔다. 이른바 비행선들이 각종 상품로고나 이미지를 달고 떠있거나 현수막을 부착한 애드벌룬 등이 올라가있는 경우는 많다. 그것들은 거대한 광고판이자 이미지, 그림이기도 하다. 작가는 열기구에 그림을 매달고 비행을 했다. 상공으 로 올라가면서 지상에 있는 자들의 눈에 호소했다. 그들이 이 그림들을 어느 장소에서나 보 아주기를 원했던 것이다. 적극적인 이 관람과 감상을 요구하는 이 전시 태도는 오늘날 좁고 협소한 개념의 전시문화와는 다른 차원에 놓여져 있다. 아울러 전시장이란 제도로부터 이탈 해 일상적 삶의 공간으로 확장시킨 이미지 전개를 만난다. 사람들은 새삼 구름과 별과 달을 보던 눈들을 고스란히 간직한 채 저 그림을 본다. 천천히 흐르고 길게 드리워져 펄럭이는 저 긴 그림은 연처럼 날고 잇다. 사람들은 향수와 낭만, 유년의 기억과 추억 등을 떠올리는 동시에 새로운 공공미술의 한 징후를 흥미롭게 접촉하고 있는 것이다.
